Privacy Policy
Effective July 5, 2026 · Applies to the ShotMagic Chrome extension and shotmagic.app
The short version: ShotMagic collects no data. Everything — screenshots, images, recognized text, history, settings, your license key — is processed and stored in your browser. Nothing you capture is ever sent anywhere: OCR involves no server at all. We cannot see what you capture, and neither can anyone else.
What ShotMagic does
ShotMagic is an OCR (optical character recognition) extension for Chrome. It reads text from the parts of a page you select, from images you right-click, or from batches of images on a page, using a recognition model that is packaged inside the extension and runs entirely in your browser.
Data we collect
None. The extension has no servers, no accounts, no analytics, no telemetry, and no crash reporting. We do not collect, transmit, sell, or share any personal data or usage data — nothing is ever sent to us. The extension's only network activity is fetching images you explicitly ask batch OCR to read, from the site that hosts them (described under "Optional site access" below).
How your captures are processed
- When you select an area or right-click an image, the pixels are handed to the recognition engine in your browser's memory, on your computer.
- The recognition model ships inside the extension package. Nothing is downloaded at runtime, and recognition works with your network disconnected.
- Captured image data is discarded after recognition finishes. It is never written to disk except as part of an export you explicitly request (for example, a ZIP that bundles original images).
What is stored in your browser
- History — your recent recognition results, kept in Chrome's local extension storage on this device only so you can revisit them. History never syncs. You can clear individual items or everything from the History page. Uninstalling the extension deletes it all.
- Settings — your preferences (such as interface language), kept in Chrome's extension storage. If you have Chrome sync turned on, Chrome carries your settings to your other devices through your own Google account — that syncing is performed by Chrome, and we never see it.
- License key (Pro) — kept in Chrome's extension storage and verified on your device with a cryptographic signature; activation makes no network request. With Chrome sync on, Chrome carries the key to your other devices so you only activate once.
- Batch session snapshots — kept in temporary session storage so an interrupted batch can be restored; Chrome discards them when the browser closes.
Permissions, explained
Every permission the extension requests maps to one user-visible feature:
| Permission | What it is used for |
|---|---|
| activeTab | Capturing the visible part of the tab where you invoke ShotMagic — only when you trigger it, never in the background. |
| scripting | Showing the selection overlay and result popup on the page you are capturing. |
| contextMenus | Adding "Copy text from image" to the right-click menu. |
| storage | Saving your history, settings, and license key locally. |
| offscreen | Running the OCR engine in a background document so pages stay responsive. |
| sidePanel | Showing the batch OCR panel. |
| notifications | Telling you when a long batch run finishes. |
| clipboardWrite | Auto-copying recognized text to your clipboard. |
Optional site access: batch OCR may ask for permission to read images hosted on other sites so it can fetch them for recognition on your device. Chrome shows you this request explicitly, you can decline it, and the images are still processed only locally.
Third parties and purchases
The extension embeds no third-party analytics, ad, or tracking code. This website is static, self-hosts its fonts, and loads no third-party resources.
When you buy Pro, the checkout is handled by our payment provider (the merchant of record) on their own site under their own privacy policy. To deliver your license key, our small fulfillment service receives your email address from the payment provider, uses it once to generate and send your key, and stores nothing. The extension itself still sends nothing anywhere.
Children's privacy
ShotMagic collects no data from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted at this address with an updated effective date. Because the extension collects nothing, changes are expected to be rare and editorial.
